Topic – Workplace Violence and Situational Awareness
Presented by Cathi Marx, Aspen Risk Management Group
Employers have a legal obligation to keep employees safe. Are you meeting yours?
This session of the Employers’ School will focus on active shooter statistics in the workplace, how domestic violence coming into the workplace contributes to this phenomenon and our responsibilities as employers under OSHA. We will also cover the risks employers face in relation to insurance coverage that may be activated in an active shooter event such as ELPI, general liability, workers’ compensation and the impact of HIPAA to a potential spousal threat.
We will discuss actual active shooter events and the concepts of Run-Hide-Fight, touching on “situational awareness” and behaviors of others that may be a pre-curser to such an event. We will end with the concepts of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design which details creative ways to design private and public workspaces, from territorial reinforcement to target hardening.
